New rotation in 2024/2025

The Pulmonology Unit at Adan Hospital is a consultation-based service within the Internal Medicine Department, managing a diverse range of respiratory conditions. The rotation provides internal medicine residents with hands-on experience in inpatient consultations, outpatient clinics, and diagnostic procedures.

In the inpatient setting, residents evaluate referrals for acute respiratory failure, COPD and asthma exacerbations, pneumonia, pulmonary embolism, pleural diseases, and suspected interstitial lung disease or pulmonary hypertension.

In the outpatient clinic, residents assess patients with asthma, COPD, bronchiectasis, ILD, pulmonary hypertension, sleep-disordered breathing, chronic cough, and lung nodules. Residents will attend a minimum of 1 clinic per week.

Teaching is integrated into daily activities, including teaching rounds, pulmonary function test (PFT) interpretation, sleep study analysis, multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, and grand rounds. Residents also attend bronchoscopy and thoracocentesis, with hands-on training when available. Topic based discussions will cover topics outlined in KBIM curriculum for pulmonology rotation. Residents will be assigned a topic to present in our pulmonology meeting.

Residents follow a structured weekly schedule that includes teaching rounds, clinics, lectures, and MDT discussions. They also cover internal medicine on-call shifts, encountering pulmonary cases alongside other subspecialties.

Training includes procedural skills such as ABG interpretation, non-invasive ventilation (NIV) management, thoracocentesis, and bronchoscopy. Evaluation includes mid-rotation feedback and end-of-rotation assessments focusing on medical knowledge, clinical reasoning, and professionalism.

The rotation aims to enhance residents’ expertise in pulmonary medicine while fostering interest in the specialty.
