Hematology Rotation – Al Amiri Hospital
Rotation Overview
This rotation provides residents with comprehensive exposure to a broad spectrum of hematological conditions across both inpatient and outpatient settings. Residents will be actively involved in the assessment and management of patients with benign and malignant hematologic disorders.
The rotation includes participation in daily ward rounds, outpatient clinics, and inpatient consultation services. Residents will also have opportunities to perform supervised procedures such as bone marrow aspiration and biopsy.
In addition, the service promotes multidisciplinary collaboration, particularly with transfusion medicine and hemato-oncology teams, enhancing residents’ understanding of integrated patient care.
First Day of Rotation:
Residents should report to the Hematology Office at Amiri Hospital on the first day of the rotation.
📍 Location: 7th floor, next to Ward 18
They will meet the hematology team and receive an orientation covering:
• Rotation workflow
• Clinical responsibilities
• Teaching activities
Clinical Responsibilities
During the rotation, residents are expected to:
• Participate in daily inpatient ward rounds
• Assess and manage hematology consults
• Attend and contribute to outpatient clinics
• Perform procedures if applicable,(e.g., bone marrow aspirate/biopsy) under supervision
• Present cases and actively participate in discussions
Teaching Activities
The rotation includes structured academic activities throughout the week:
• Sunday: Academic teaching session
• Tuesday & Wednesday: Bedside teaching
• Thursday: Journal club
Residents are expected to actively participate and present when assigned.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of the rotation, residents should be able to:
• Recognize and manage common hematological conditions
• Approach anemia, cytopenias, and coagulopathies systematically
• Understand indications and interpretation of hematological investigations
• Develop initial management plans for hematologic emergencies

Residents are encouraged to utilize reputable, evidence-based hematology resources, including:
• American Society of Hematology (ASH) clinical practice guidelines
• British Society for Haematology (BSH) guidelines
• International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) guidance on thrombosis and hemostasis
• Blood journal and “How I treat..”
• Disease-specific guidelines for hemoglobinopathies and bleeding disorders
• UpToDate for point-of-care reference
