During a nephrology rotation for medical board residents, participants undergo an immersive experience in diagnosing and managing kidney-related disorders alongside seasoned nephrologists. This rotation typically encompasses clinical exposure across various settings, including outpatient clinics and hospital wards, where residents interact with patients presenting with diverse kidney conditions. They hone their skills in patient history-taking, physical examinations, and the interpretation of relevant laboratory and imaging tests. Additionally, residents rotate through dialysis units, gaining insights into hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis procedures, as well as the principles of dialysis prescription and management of complications. Opportunities to observe or perform renal biopsies under supervision may be available, facilitating learning about biopsy techniques and interpretation. Residents also delve into managing acute kidney injury (AKI), chronic kidney disease (CKD), and transplant nephrology orientation, learning about evaluation, treatment strategies, and complications management in these scenarios. Didactic sessions, including lectures, case discussions, and journal clubs, supplement clinical exposure, while research opportunities may further enrich the learning experience. Overall, the nephrology rotation equips medical board residents with the knowledge and skills essential for effectively diagnosing and managing kidney disorders.
