Clinical Hematology Unit Rotation

Residents should report to the Hematology Doctors' Office (Room 8 in Medical OPD) on their first day of the rotation. They will be provided with a personalized schedule detailing their duties on each day of the rotation with their assigned tutor as well as teaching sessions

Our Unit structure:
- Our service provides inpatient service, day care service, external consultations,
and outpatient service.
- The team responsible for inpatient service is composed of a specialist, a senior
registrar, and 2 registrars. The team is responsible for following up the medical
consultations coming from the medical & surgical wards, ICU, and CCU.
- The day care team is composed of a specialist & a registrar. The team is
responsible for following up thalassemia patients coming regularly for blood
transfusions.
- Around 100 thalassemia patients are coming to hematology day care regularly
every 2-4 weeks for blood transfusions.
- Daily rounds are done to follow thalassemia patients: to ensure the safety of
blood transfusions, to follow laboratory & radiological investigations, and to
adjust their iron-chelation therapy & other medications.
- Other rare bone marrow diseases who require regular blood transfusions are
also receiving their blood transfusions in the hematology day care.
- Some Hemophilia patients are seen in hematology day care to receive their
clotting factor concentrate.
- Hematology day care also offers IV iron treatment to IDA patients.
- External consultations team is composed of 2 specialists & 2 senior registrars.
The team covers the consultations coming from all hospitals & centers of Alsabah
medical area.
- Outpatient service: involves daily clinics run by senior registrar level and above.
- Team meetings to review consultations and challenging cases and teaching
sessions are held on a weekly basis.
