The Endocrinology rotation in Jahra Hospital will be a mix of inpatient and outpatient activities. Our inpatient service is a consult service where we provide consultations to other specialties. Most of the cases we see are diabetes cases, however, residents also get exposed to a variety of endocrine cases such as thyroid, bone & calcium, adrenal and pituitary cases. Residents see consults on their own and then review the case with the tutor responsible for rounding on that day.

For the outpatient clinics, residents do around 8-10 clinics per month. They see around 4 patients/clinic on their own and then review the cases with their tutor. In the general endocrine clinic, residents see a variety of cases that include all fields of endocrinology. Residents also join specialized clinics that include insulin pump, obesity, and thyroid clinics.

During the rotation, we provide residents with a weekly structured teaching sessions in addition to daily teaching around the cases. The structured sessions include basics and types of insulin, non-insulin anti-DM agents, hypothyroidism and hypercalcemia.

Most of the residents’ interaction is with tutors. Their interaction with non-tutors is limited to some specialized clinics that are managed by non-tutors such as insulin pump and obesity clinics in addition to minimal interaction during team rounds. We try to make sure that non-tutors turn these clinic days into a meaningful learning experience and that they provide residents with adequate teaching and not just shadowing.
We encourage residents to share their experience in these clinics with us and provide us with their feedback.

One of the unique experiences that we provide to our resident is the thyroid nodule and FNAB clinic. Residents spend a full day in this clinic where they practice a hand-on thyroid ultrasound and get to see and learn about thyroid nodules and thyroid fine needle aspiration. We perform 8-10 thyroid FNAB/clinic.

Residents are always supervised by a tutor. The most responsible supervisor is the rotation coordinator who oversees all their activities. Residents always review the consults with one of the supervisors.

We provide residents with evaluation and feedback throughout the rotation. We observe their improvement and the effect of feedback on their performance as they progress towards the end of the rotation. The rotation coordinator oversees all residents activities and progress and provide them with the end of rotation feedback on their last day of the rotation.

Residents will be contacted by the rotation coordinator one week before the start of their rotation when they will receive the rotation schedule and instructions.
