Anesthesia
Curriculum
Our curriculum uses the Royal College of Physicians of Canada Competency-by-Design (CBD), which is a competency-based curriculum.
Residents go through stages of residency. In each stage, residents focus on gaining competency in specific tasks, called Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs). Once they gain competency in all of those tasks, they move to the next stage.
Stages
Transition to Discipline (TTD)
EPAs
- TTD1a Performing preoperative assessments for healthy adult patients who will be undergoing a non-complex scheduled surgical procedure - part A: Patient assessment Direct observation or chart/case review by supervisor
- TTD1b Performing preoperative assessments for healthy adult patients who will be undergoing a non-complex scheduled surgical procedure - Part B: Submit logbook of patient assessment encounters
- TTD2 Monitoring adult patients undergoing non-complex surgical procedures, under general or regional anesthesia
- TTD3 Performing the postoperative transfer of care of healthy adult patients following anon-complex surgical procedure, including postoperative orders

- F1 Using the anesthetic assessment to generate the anesthetic considerations and management plan including postoperative disposition, and obtaining informed consent, for non-complex patients and non-complex surgery
- F2a Providing perioperative anesthetic management for non-complex cases in adult patients

- F2c Providing perioperative anesthetic management for non-complex cases in adult patients

- F10 Assessing, diagnosing and managing patients with common medical or surgical presentations in acute care settings, and advancing their care plans.
- F11 Assessing pregnant patients and providing routine obstetric care or initial medical management for acute medical, surgical or obstetric conditions
- F12a Assessing and providing labour analgesia for healthy parturients with an uncomplicated pregnancy, including the management of common complications of labour analgesia
- F12b Assessing and providing labour analgesia for healthy parturients with an uncomplicated pregnancy, including the management of common complications of labour analgesia
- F13 Providing anesthesia for patients undergoing non-complex cesarean section
- F14 Providing perioperative anesthetic management for non-complex cases in pediatric patients
- F15 Managing pediatric patients with common postoperative complications in the post anesthesia care unit or ward
