Critical Care Medicine
Curriculum
Our curriculum uses the Royal College of Physicians of Canada Competency-by-Design (CBD), which is a competency-based curriculum.
Residents go through stages of residency. In each stage, residents focus on gaining competency in specific tasks, called Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs). Once they gain competency in all of those tasks, they move to the next stage.
Stages
Transition to Discipline (TTD)
EPAs
- TTD1 Assessing and providing initial management for new patients admitted to the ICU or seen in consultation
- TTD2 Initiating and leading resuscitation for hemodynamically unstable patients
- TTD3 Coordinating patient care and delegating tasks in the ICU setting
- TTD4 Transferring clinical information between health care providers at handover
- TTD5 Providing routine updates to patients or families
Foundation of Discipline (F)
EPAs
- F1 Evaluating, stabilizing, and managing patients presenting with common ICU conditions
- F2 Evaluating and managing uncomplicated and/or routine patients requiring mechanical ventilation
- F3 Teaching, supervising, and leading junior physicians and other health care professionals
- F4 Identifying and providing care for patients’ and their family’s needs around the end-of-life
- F5 Co-leading multidisciplinary teams
Core of Discipline (C)
EPAs
- C1 Managing patients with respiratory failure
- C2 Managing patients with multisystem organ dysfunction
- C3 Managing the resuscitation of critically ill patients
- C4 Performing Procedures: Airway management
- C5 Performing procedures: Vascular access
- C6 Performing procedures: Chest tube, paracentesis, lumbar punctures, and temporary transvenous pacemaker insertion
- C7 Performing Point-of-Care ultrasound
- C8 Caring for patients with prolonged ICU stay and/or organ support-dependent critical illness and their primary caregiver(s)
- C9 Identifying, assessing, and managing potential organ donors
- C10 Managing the transport of patients who are critically ill
- C11 Leading daily clinical rounds
- C12 Supervising, assessing, and coaching junior colleagues
- C13 Debriefing routine resuscitations and critical events
